You’re Creative

I’ve been drawing and sketching since I was a kid. People would see my work and say, “Wow, you’re so creative!” And for the longest time, I believed that creativity only belonged to artists—that it was about painting, drawing, or coming up with something visually stunning.

But as I grew older, I realised something powerful:

Creativity is in everything.

We often think of creativity as something exclusive to designers, musicians, and writers. But in reality, it exists in the most unexpected places:

  • A mechanic figuring out a faster way to fix an engine? Creative.

  • A housemaid using a trick to remove a tough stain? Creative.

  • A chef creating a new recipe? Creative.

  • A police officer setting up a trap to catch a thief? Creative.

  • An engineer tweaking a system to make it run smoother? Creative.

We see it every day, yet we rarely call it what it is. Creativity isn’t just about making something beautiful—it’s about thinking differently, solving problems, and seeing possibilities where others don’t.

We Were All Creative Once

As kids, creativity came effortlessly to us. We saw shapes in the clouds, turned the floor into lava, and brought our toys to life with imaginary adventures. We asked endless “what if?” questions.

But somewhere along the way, many of us started believing that creativity was a gift only a few possessed.

We became hesitant to explore, to experiment, to play with ideas. The fear of failure or judgment held us back.

The Truth About Creativity

Creativity isn’t about talent. It’s about thinking differently, finding solutions, and seeing possibilities where others don’t.

Creativity is not just a talent some are born with. It’s a mindset. A way of looking at the world and asking:

  • What else could this be?

  • What if we tried it another way?

It’s not about having a paintbrush in hand—it’s about problem-solving with imagination. And the best part? It’s something anyone can cultivate.

Creativity is a Muscle

Like any skill, creativity grows the more you use it. The more you challenge yourself to think differently, the sharper it gets. The key is to practice seeing things from new angles and embracing the process rather than just the outcome.

Think about the last time you found a clever way to fix something at home without the "right" tools. Or when you improvised a recipe with whatever was in your kitchen. Maybe you figured out a new way to organise your workload for maximum efficiency.

That was creativity. And you probably didn’t even realise it.

How to Cultivate Creativity in Daily Life

If you want to strengthen your creative thinking, here are some simple ways to do it:

1. Ask More "What If?" Questions

Train yourself to see things differently. Next time you come across a problem, ask:

  • What if I tried it another way?

  • What if I removed a step?

  • What if I combined this with something unexpected?

2. Embrace Constraints

Some of the best ideas come from working within limits. Limited time, resources, or options force you to think outside the box. Treat challenges as creative fuel rather than obstacles.

3. Experiment Without Fear

Creativity thrives when you allow yourself to explore without worrying about failure. Try things just for the sake of curiosity—whether it’s sketching, cooking, writing, or building something. The process itself builds creative confidence.

4. Change Your Perspective

Sometimes, looking at a problem from someone else’s point of view can unlock new solutions. How would a child approach it? How would someone from a completely different industry tackle it?

5. Give Your Brain Space

Ever noticed how the best ideas come in the shower or during a walk? Creativity needs breathing room. Give yourself moments of stillness to let your mind wander and connect ideas.

Final Thoughts

Creativity is not exclusive to artists. It’s something we all use, whether we realise it or not. It’s about approaching problems in new ways, making unexpected connections, and finding solutions others might overlook.

You don’t have to be an artist to be creative. You just have to be willing to see things differently.

So, the next time you solve a problem in a unique way, don’t brush it off as luck or coincidence. Recognise it for what it is—your creativity at work.
